Volume Converter

Convert liters, US gallons, imperial gallons, cups, and cubic meters with exact liter factors and the substitution steps used on paper.

Quick AnswerChange the volume into liters, then into the target unit. One US liquid gallon is exactly 3.785411784 L. Two US cups are 473.176473 mL.
1 gal = 3.785411784 L

Kitchen cups, pints, quarts, and gallons are US customary. The imperial gallon is listed separately and is larger.

Steps

  1. Convert to liters: 1 × 3.785411784 = 3.785411784 L.
  2. Convert from liters to L: 3.785411784 / 1 = 3.785411784 L.
  3. Equivalent factor: 1 gal = 3.785411784 L.

How to Use the Volume Converter

Enter the volume you have, choose its unit and the unit you want, then select Convert Volume. The tool always goes through liters, which keeps metric cubes, US kitchen measures, and the imperial gallon on one scale.

  1. Type the number. Decimals and negatives are allowed.
  2. Pick the from and to units, or use Swap to reverse them.
  3. Select Convert Volume. Reset restores 1 US gallon to liters.

The Unit Converter on SolverCalc also has a short volume list plus length, mass, and temperature. This page is only volume, so a liter is not confused with a kilogram, and a US gallon is not confused with an imperial gallon. A sphere’s V = (4/3)πr³ belongs on the Sphere Calculator. A spherical zone’s V = (1/6)πh(3a² + 3b² + h²) belongs on the Spherical Zone Calculator. A can’s V = πr²h belongs on the Cylinder Calculator. A box’s V = LWh belongs on the Rectangular Prism Calculator. A triangular prism’s V = Bh belongs on the Triangular Prism Calculator. A party hat’s V = (1/3)πr²h belongs on the Cone Calculator. A tent’s V = (1/3)Bh belongs on the Pyramid Calculator. Convert the cubic units here afterward.

The Liter Method

target = value × (from → L) ÷ (to → L)

Every unit here is defined as an exact multiple of a liter. A milliliter and a cubic centimeter are the same size: 0.001 L. A cubic meter is 1,000 L. A US liquid gallon is 231 cubic inches, which is exactly 3.785411784 L.

Kitchen cups, tablespoons, and teaspoons on this page are the US customary sizes used in US recipes, not the slightly different metric cup of 250 mL.

Volume Converter Examples

One US gallon in liters

1 US gal = 3.785411784 L. Rounded classroom values of 3.8 L are close; this tool keeps the exact definition.

Two US cups

2 × 0.2365882365 L = 0.473176473 L = 473.176473 mL. That is also one US pint.

One cubic meter

1 m³ = 1,000 L. A cubic meter of water has a mass of about 1,000 kg near 4 °C, but this page converts volume only.

Imperial gallon to US gallon

1 imperial gallon = 4.54609 L, and 1 US gallon = 3.785411784 L, so 1 imp gal ≈ 1.20095 US gal. Fuel economy figures must name which gallon they use.

The same unit

10 L to 10 L must stay 10. If the units match, no factor is applied.

US Gallon vs. Imperial Gallon

The US liquid gallon is 231 in³. The imperial gallon used in the UK and some Commonwealth countries is larger: exactly 4.54609 L. About 1.20 US gallons fit in one imperial gallon.

This page does not convert the US dry gallon, and it does not convert mass. A liter of oil does not weigh the same as a liter of water.

Common Volume Mistakes

Mixing US and imperial gallons

A UK fuel gallon is larger. Converting 10 imperial gallons as if they were US gallons understates the liters by about 20%.

Using a metric cup in a US recipe

A US cup is 236.588 mL. A 250 mL metric cup is about 5.6% larger.

Treating a liter as a kilogram

That shortcut is only for water near 4 °C. Use the Unit Converter for mass.

Using a length factor without cubing

1 ft = 0.3048 m, so 1 ft³ = 0.3048³ m³, not 0.3048 m³.

Confusing milliliters with cubic centimeters in medicine vs. cooking

They are the same volume: 1 mL = 1 cm³. The names differ by context, not by size.

Volume Converter FAQs

How do you convert gallons to liters?

Multiply a US gallon by 3.785411784. For an imperial gallon, multiply by 4.54609.

How many milliliters are in 2 US cups?

473.176473 mL.

How many liters is one cubic meter?

Exactly 1,000 L.

Why do you convert through liters?

Every unit on this page has an exact liter factor, so one intermediate unit avoids a tangle of pairwise tables.

Does this convert area or mass?

No. Volume only. Use the Area Converter for acres and square feet, and the Unit Converter for kilograms.

Are my numbers sent to a server?

No. The calculation runs locally in your browser.
