Decimal to Percent Calculator

Convert a decimal to a percent, or a percent back to a decimal, by multiplying or dividing by 100 and moving the point two places.

Quick AnswerMultiply a decimal by 100 and write a percent sign. 0.75 × 100 = 75, so 0.75 = 75%. Divide a percent by 100 to reverse it: 15% = 0.15.
0.75 = 75%

A leading dot such as .5 is allowed. In percent mode you may type 15 or 15%.

Steps

  1. A percent is a number of hundredths, so multiply the decimal by 100.
  2. 0.75 × 100 = 75.
  3. Write the percent sign: 75%.
  4. That is the same as moving the decimal point two places to the right.

How to Use the Decimal to Percent Calculator

Choose a direction, type one number, and select Convert. The tool multiplies or divides by 100 and shows the same value as hundredths.

  1. Select Decimal to percent or Percent to decimal.
  2. Enter a finite decimal, or a percent such as 15 or 15%.
  3. Read the converted value, the hundredths form, and the two-place move.

The Percent Calculator finds a percent of a number, what percent one value is of another, and percent change. This page only changes notation between a decimal and a percent. 0.75 as a fraction belongs on the Decimal to Fraction Calculator. A grade or exam weight belongs on the Final Grade or GPA pages.

Hundredths and the Two-Place Move

percent = decimal × 100  ·  decimal = percent ÷ 100

Percent means per hundred. 75% is 75 per 100, which is the decimal 0.75. Multiplying by 100 counts those hundredths; dividing by 100 writes them back as a decimal.

On paper, moving the decimal point two places does the same work. Right for decimal to percent: 0.75 → 75. Left for percent to decimal: 15 → 0.15. If there are not enough digits, write zeros: 0.03 → 03, which is 3%.

Decimal to Percent Examples

A familiar hundredth

0.75 × 100 = 75, so 75%. As hundredths: 75/100. The Decimal to Fraction Calculator reduces that to 3/4.

A tenth

0.4 × 100 = 40, so 40%. That is 40/100, the same amount as 2/5.

More than 100%

1.5 × 100 = 150, so 150%. A decimal greater than 1 is a percent greater than 100.

A small decimal

0.03 × 100 = 3, so 3%. Move the point two places and keep the leading zero as a placeholder: 03 is 3%.

Zero and a negative

0 = 0%. −0.25 × 100 = −25, so −25%. The sign stays with the number.

Percent to Decimal

Divide by 100, or move the point two places left. 15% = 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15, which is the factor the Percent Calculator uses for “15% of 200.”

12.5% = 0.125. 150% = 1.5. 3% = 0.03. You may type the percent sign or leave it off.

Common Decimal–Percent Mistakes

Moving the point one place instead of two

0.75 is 75%, not 7.5%. Two places: tenths and hundredths.

Treating 75 as 75% in decimal-to-percent mode

75 as a decimal is 7500%. If you already have a percent, switch to Percent to decimal.

Writing 0.75% when you mean 75%

0.75% is 0.0075 as a decimal. The percent sign already means “divided by 100.”

Confusing this with percent of a number

0.15 × 200 = 30 is “15% of 200.” Convert 0.15 to 15% here, then use the Percent Calculator for the product.

Entering 3/4 in the decimal box

That is a fraction. Type 0.75, or convert 3/4 on the Fraction Calculator first.

Decimal to Percent FAQs

How do you convert 0.75 to a percent?

Multiply by 100: 0.75 × 100 = 75, so 75%.

How do you convert 15% to a decimal?

Divide by 100: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15.

Why move the decimal point two places?

A percent is hundredths. Two decimal places are the hundredths place, so two moves match × 100 or ÷ 100.

Can a percent be greater than 100?

Yes. 1.5 = 150%. That means one and a half times the whole.

Does this find 15% of 200?

No. Convert 15% to 0.15 here, then use the Percent Calculator for 0.15 × 200.

Are my numbers sent to a server?

No. The calculation runs locally in your browser.
