Savings Goal Calculator

Find the monthly saving amount needed to reach a target by a chosen deadline.

Quick Answer

To grow $2,000 into $5,000 in 12 months without assumed interest, save $250 per month. This tool plans contributions and does not assume investment returns.

Monthly needed = max(0, goal − current savings) ÷ months left

Enter one goal in one currency. No interest, investment return, inflation, fees, or taxes are included. Monthly deposits are assumed to be made on time. Leave the planned amount blank to see only the required amount.

How do you plan a savings goal?

Enter the amount you want to have, what you have already set aside for that same goal, and the number of months remaining. The calculator divides the gap evenly across those months. You can enter a planned monthly contribution to compare your current plan with the target.

Use money already earmarked for this goal, not your entire bank balance. Set a realistic deadline and revisit the calculation when your balance or available income changes.

How is the monthly savings target calculated?

Remaining gap equals the target minus the current goal balance, with a floor of zero. Divide the gap by months remaining to get the monthly contribution. A weekly equivalent multiplies the monthly target by 12 and divides by 52.

If your current goal balance already meets or exceeds the target, the new required contribution is zero. If you enter a planned contribution, the projected balance is current savings plus that contribution times the number of months. These are no-interest arithmetic estimates.

Example: save $3,000 more in one year

Suppose your target is $5,000 and $2,000 is already reserved. The remaining gap is $3,000. With 12 months left, $250 per month meets the target; the weekly equivalent is about $57.69. If you plan to save $200 per month instead, the no-interest balance at the deadline would be $4,400, which is $600 short.

What if the monthly amount is not affordable?

Check the difference between the required amount and what your budget can support. You could extend the deadline, reduce the target, make a one-time contribution, or find spending you can redirect. The calculator does not decide which choice is appropriate.

For emergency cash, keep account safety and access in mind. For long-term investing, uncertain returns make a guaranteed target inappropriate; this page deliberately uses a zero-return baseline.

    Savings Goal Calculator FAQs

    Does the tool include interest?

No. It uses a zero-return baseline so the target depends only on savings already set aside and new contributions.

What if I already have the full amount?

The remaining gap and monthly amount needed are zero.

What does the projected balance mean?

It is current goal savings plus your entered planned monthly contribution for the months left.

Why is the weekly amount not one-fourth of monthly?

It uses 12 months and 52 weeks in a year, so the average is consistent across the year.
