Estimate a purchase total from the rates you enter, with state and local tax shown separately.
A $100 taxable purchase at a combined 8% rate adds $8 tax and totals $108. Enter the rate that applies to your location and purchase; this tool does not look it up.
Tax and total appear after calculation.
How do you estimate the price after sales tax?
Enter the pre-tax price for one item and how many you are buying. If a discount applies to the whole order before tax, enter that amount. Enter the state and local rates applicable to this taxable purchase. The calculator subtracts the discount from the order subtotal, estimates each tax component, and adds them to the taxable subtotal.
The tool does not know your address, product classification, or whether tax applies. Find the applicable rate and tax treatment from the seller or the relevant state and local tax authority before relying on a result.
How are state and local tax calculated?
Pre-discount subtotal equals unit price times quantity. Taxable subtotal equals that amount minus the pre-tax order discount. State tax equals taxable subtotal times the state rate divided by 100. Local tax uses the same subtotal and local rate. Both components are rounded to cents separately, then added to the taxable subtotal.
This additive method is appropriate only when both entered rates apply to the same taxable base. A jurisdiction or seller may apply different taxability, fees, thresholds, or rounding conventions.
Example: $100 purchase at 6% state and 2% local tax
For one taxable $100 item with no discount, 6% state tax is $6 and 2% local tax is $2. The estimated total is $108. If the seller applies a $10 pre-tax order discount, the taxable subtotal becomes $90, the two tax components total $7.20, and the estimated total becomes $97.20.
These rates are illustrative, not a rate for a particular state or city.
Why can checkout tax differ from the estimate?
State, local, and special-district rates can vary by delivery or purchase location. Some goods and services are exempt, and shipping or fees may be treated differently. A seller may also use line-item rounding instead of the order-level rounding in this tool.
Check the receipt and the tax authority’s current guidance for your exact transaction. The IRS sales-tax-deduction calculator serves a different purpose; this page estimates checkout tax only.
Sales Tax Calculator FAQs
Does this tool find my state or local rate?
No. Enter rates from a current authoritative source for your purchase location and item.
Is the discount applied before tax?
Yes. The entered order discount is subtracted before both estimated tax components.
Can I use this for tax-exempt items?
Do not apply a rate to an exempt purchase; check jurisdiction rules first. Enter 0% only if you know the purchase is exempt.
Why might the receipt differ by a cent?
Sellers may round per item or apply different tax bases, fees, or jurisdiction-specific rules.
