Area Converter

Convert acres, hectares, square meters, and square feet with exact international factors and the square-meter steps used on paper.

Quick AnswerChange the area into square meters, then into the target unit. One international acre is 43,560 square feet, which is exactly 4,046.8564224 m². A 500 ft² room is 46.45152 m².
1 acre = 4046.8564224 m2

Acres are the international acre (43,560 ft²). Square miles and feet use the international foot of 0.3048 m.

Steps

  1. Convert to square meters: 1 × 4046.8564224 = 4046.8564224 m2.
  2. Convert from square meters to m2: 4046.8564224 / 1 = 4046.8564224 m2.
  3. Equivalent factor: 1 acre = 4046.8564224 m2.

How to Use the Area Converter

Enter the area you have, choose its unit and the unit you want, then select Convert Area. The tool always goes through square meters, which keeps acres, hectares, and square feet on one consistent scale.

  1. Type the number. Decimals and negatives are allowed.
  2. Pick the from and to units, or use Swap to reverse them.
  3. Select Convert Area. Reset restores 1 acre to square meters.

The Unit Converter on SolverCalc handles length, mass, a short volume list, and temperature. This page is only area, so a square foot is not confused with a linear foot. For liters and gallons, use the Volume Converter. Need the area of a triangle first? Use the Triangle Area Calculator. A circle’s A = πr² belongs on the Circle Calculator. A sector (1/2)r²θ belongs on the Arc Length Calculator. Then convert the square units here.

The Square-Meter Method

target = value × (from → m²) ÷ (to → m²)

Every area unit here is defined as an exact multiple of a square meter. The international foot is 0.3048 m, so 1 ft² = 0.09290304 m² exactly. An international acre is 43,560 ft², which is 4,046.8564224 m². A hectare is 10,000 m² by definition.

Converting through m² is the same method as converting lengths through meters. You never multiply two linear conversion factors without squaring: 1 ft = 0.3048 m, so 1 ft² = 0.3048² m².

Area Converter Examples

One acre in square meters

1 acre = 4,046.8564224 m². Rounded classroom values of 4,047 m² or 0.4 ha are close; this tool keeps the exact international definition.

A 500 square-foot room

500 × 0.09290304 = 46.45152 m². That is a typical apartment listing conversion when the floor plan is metric and the ad is in square feet.

One hectare in acres

10,000 ÷ 4,046.8564224 ≈ 2.47105381467 acres. A hectare is larger than two acres and smaller than two and a half.

Two square kilometers

2 km² = 2,000,000 m², and 1 mi² = 2,589,988.110336 m², so 2 km² ≈ 0.772204317085 mi².

The same unit

10 m² to 10 m² must stay 10. If the units match, no factor is applied.

What an Acre Is

The international acre used here is 43,560 square feet with the 1959 international foot. Survey acres in some US legal descriptions differ by a few parts per million. This page does not convert those survey units, and it does not convert building plots that mix horizontal area with slope area.

A hectare is the metric land unit you see on farm and forest maps. One hectare is a 100 m by 100 m square. About 2.47 acres fit in that square.

Common Area Mistakes

Using a length factor without squaring

1 m ≈ 3.28 ft, but 1 m² is about 10.76 ft², not 3.28 ft². Square the linear factor.

Treating an acre as 4,000 m²

The exact international value is 4,046.8564224 m². Rounding to 4,000 m² drops more than a full percent.

Mixing acres and hectares as if they were equal

1 ha ≈ 2.47 acres. A 10-hectare field is about 24.7 acres, not 10.

Confusing square feet with linear feet

Flooring sold by the square foot is area. A 12-foot wall is a length. Use the Unit Converter for lengths.

Using an imperial acre or a survey acre by accident

This tool uses the international acre. Older deeds may use a US survey acre, which is slightly different.

Area Converter FAQs

How do you convert acres to square meters?

Multiply by 4,046.8564224. That factor is 43,560 times 0.09290304 m² per square foot.

How many square meters is 500 square feet?

500 ft² = 46.45152 m².

How many acres is one hectare?

About 2.47105 acres. A hectare is exactly 10,000 m².

Why do you convert through square meters?

Every unit on this page has an exact m² factor, so one intermediate unit avoids a tangle of pairwise tables.

Does this convert volume or length?

No. Area only. Use the Volume Converter for liters and gallons, and the Unit Converter for meters and pounds.

Are my numbers sent to a server?

No. The calculation runs locally in your browser.
