How do I use the Roman numeral converter?

Use the Roman numeral converter by selecting the conversion direction, entering a whole number or Roman numeral, and selecting Convert. The result panel shows the answer, input type, and conversion steps.

For number-to-Roman conversion, enter a whole number from 1 to 3999. For Roman-to-number conversion, enter standard symbols such as XLII, MMXXVI, or MCMXCIV.

What are Roman numerals?

Roman numerals are a numeral system that represents numbers with letters. The seven standard symbols are I, V, X, L, C, D, and M.

Each symbol has a fixed value. I equals 1, V equals 5, X equals 10, L equals 50, C equals 100, D equals 500, and M equals 1000.

Roman numerals appear on clocks, outlines, book chapters, movie sequels, monuments, and event names.

What Roman numeral rules matter most?

Roman numerals use addition and subtraction. A smaller symbol after a larger symbol adds value. A smaller symbol before a larger symbol subtracts value.

VI equals 6 because V + I = 5 + 1. IV equals 4 because I before V subtracts 1 from 5.

Standard subtractive pairs are IV, IX, XL, XC, CD, and CM. Nonstandard forms such as IL for 49 are not valid in the usual modern system.

What are Roman numeral conversion examples?

Example 1: Convert 49 to Roman numerals

Split 49 into 40 and 9. Forty is XL. Nine is IX. The answer is XLIX.

Example 2: Convert 2026 to Roman numerals

Split 2026 into 2000, 20, and 6. The parts are MM, XX, and VI. The answer is MMXXVI.

Example 3: Convert MCMXCIV to a number

M is 1000, CM is 900, XC is 90, and IV is 4. The total is 1994.

What is the Roman numeral chart?

I1III = 3
V5VI = 6
X10XL = 40
L50LXX = 70
C100CM = 900
D500DCC = 700
M1000MM = 2000

What Roman numeral mistakes should I avoid?

Writing too many repeated symbols

I, X, C, and M repeat up to three times in standard notation. Four is IV, not IIII.

Using invalid subtractive pairs

Use IV, IX, XL, XC, CD, and CM. Do not use IL for 49 or IC for 99.

Entering zero or negative numbers

Standard Roman numerals do not represent zero or negative values.

Mixing lowercase and spaces

The converter normalizes lowercase letters and removes spaces before validation.
