Final Grade Calculator

Find the score you need on a final exam to reach a target course grade, using the remaining weight and the work already done.

Quick AnswerCourse = current × (1 − w) + final × w. Solve for the final: (desired − current × (1 − w)) / w. If you have 88 now, the final is 25% of the course, and you want 90, you need 96 on the final.
Need 96 on the final

Enter percents, such as 88, 25, and 90. The final weight is the share of the course that is still ahead, not the score itself.

Needed on the final
96

A score of 96 on the final reaches 90.

StatusPossible
Already earned66
Course if final is 10091
Course if final is 066

Steps

  1. The work already done is 75% of the course: 88 × 0.75 = 66.
  2. The remaining 25% must bring the course to 90.
  3. Solve 66 + 0.25 × (final) = 90.
  4. final = (90 − 66) / 0.25 = 96.

How to Use the Final Grade Calculator

Enter the grade you have now, the percent of the course that the final is worth, and the course grade you want. The tool solves for the final-exam score and also shows the course grade if that exam is 100 or 0.

  1. Type the current course percent, before the final.
  2. Type the final’s weight from the syllabus, as a percent such as 25.
  3. Type the desired course percent and select Find Needed Score.

The Weighted Average Calculator is the same algebra with any list of values. This page is only the two-part course: work so far and one remaining exam. The GPA Calculator turns letter grades and credits into a 4.0 average and does not answer “what do I need on Friday’s final?”

The Remaining-Weight Formula

final = (desired − current × (1 − w)) / w

If the final is worth 25%, then w = 0.25 and the work already done is 75% of the course. That 75% is locked in: 88 × 0.75 = 66 course points. The last 25% must supply the rest of the target 90, so you need 24 more points from an exam that counts as 0.25 of the course: 24 / 0.25 = 96.

The same identity written forward is course = current × (1 − w) + final × w. That is a two-term weighted average. The calculator rearranges it to solve for the missing score.

Final Grade Examples

A reachable 90

Current 88, final 25%, target 90. Already earned 66. Needed on the final: 96. A perfect 100 would finish the course at 91.

A 30% final

Current 82, final 30%, target 85. Already earned 57.4. Needed: 92. The larger the remaining weight, the more the final can still move the course.

Holding the same grade

Current 70, final 40%, target 70. You need 70 on the final. Scoring the same as your current grade always holds the course grade, for any weight.

Already above the target

Current 95, final 50%, target 90. You need only 85. A 0 on the final would drop the course to 47.5, so the target is safer than it looks but not automatic.

Current 90, final 20%, target 70 is already locked in: 90 × 0.80 = 72, so even a 0 on the final beats 70. The needed score is negative, and the status reads Already there.

Out of reach

Current 85, final 20%, target 90. You would need 110. Even 100 on the final finishes at 88. The remaining slice is too small to add 5 course points.

When the Target Is Out of Reach

The highest possible course grade is current × (1 − w) + 100 × w. If that number is below the target, no legal exam score works. The Over 100 preset shows this: a 20% final can add at most 20 course points.

A needed score below 0 means the target is already met even if the final is 0. That happens when the locked-in share is already at or above the desired grade.

Common Final-Grade Mistakes

Using the final’s point value instead of its course weight

A 200-point exam that is 25% of the course still uses w = 0.25. The calculator wants the syllabus percent, not the raw points.

Averaging the current grade and the target

The average of 88 and 90 is 89, which is not the needed final. The remaining weight is what decides the mix.

Forgetting that the current grade is already weighted

If your LMS already shows a course percent that includes some categories and excludes the final, use that as the current grade and the leftover percent as the weight.

Treating this as a GPA question

This tool is one course and one remaining exam. Term or cumulative GPA belongs on the GPA Calculator.

Entering 0 for the final weight

If nothing remains, the course grade is already finished and there is no exam to solve for.

Final Grade FAQs

How do you calculate the grade you need on a final?

Subtract the already-earned share current × (1 − w) from the desired course grade, then divide by the final weight w.

What do I need on a 25% final if I have 88 and want 90?

96.

What if the needed score is over 100?

The target is impossible. The course-if-100 metric is the best possible finish.

Do I have to enter the final as a percent?

Yes. 25 means 25% of the course. The weight must be greater than 0 and at most 100.

Is this the same as a weighted average?

Yes, with two terms. Use the Weighted Average Calculator when you have more than one remaining category.

Are my grades sent to a server?

No. The calculation runs locally in your browser.
