Calculate a grade percentage, letter grade, points missed, points needed to pass, and pass/fail status from scored points and total possible points.
If you scored 46 out of 50, your grade is 92%. On a common 90/80/70/60 scale, that is an A.

How to use the grade calculator
Enter the points earned and total possible points. The calculator divides scored points by total points, converts the decimal to a percentage, estimates a letter grade, and compares the score with the selected passing percentage.
This page is best for a single test, quiz, assignment, or points-based activity.
If homework, exams, labs, and projects have different weights, use the weighted grade calculator instead.
Grade percentage formula
Grade percentage = scored points ÷ total points × 100. The decimal score is scored points ÷ total points. The percentage is the decimal multiplied by 100.
Worked example
If a student earns 46 points out of 50, the decimal score is 46 ÷ 50 = 0.92. Convert to a percent: 0.92 × 100 = 92%. On a standard scale, 92% is an A.
Letter grade scale
| Percent | Standard letter | Plus/minus option |
|---|---|---|
| 90–100% | A | A− to A+ |
| 80–89.99% | B | B− to B+ |
| 70–79.99% | C | C− to C+ |
| 60–69.99% | D | D− to D+ |
| Below 60% | F | F |
Schools can use different grading scales, rounding rules, and gradebook policies, so use your official course scale for final decisions.
Common grade calculation mistakes
- Entering points missed instead of points scored.
- Using this single-score calculator for weighted course categories.
- Rounding before calculating the final percentage.
- Assuming every school uses the same letter-grade cutoffs.
- Ignoring extra credit, late penalties, curves, or dropped assignments.
